Can You Replace Windows and Doors in a Winnipeg Winter? What Really Happens on a January Install

Replacing windows and doors in a Winnipeg winter, one opening at a time

The short answer: yes, you can replace windows and doors in a Winnipeg winter, and we do it every week from November to March. Each opening is out for 30–60 minutes, the rest of the house stays sealed, and we use low-temperature foam and sealants rated to -30°C. The real limits are wind, extreme cold below about -25°C (we reschedule), and the three-to-five-week build time on custom units. This post covers how a winter install actually goes, what’s different from summer, the honest pros and cons, and how to prep.

“Can you even do that in January?” is the most common question we hear after Halloween. I understand the worry. Nobody wants a hole in the wall at -28°C. Here’s what really happens.

How a winter window install works, step by step

  1. One opening at a time. We never pull two windows at once. The crew removes a unit, preps the opening, sets the new window, foams and tapes it, then moves to the next. Most openings are exposed for well under an hour.
  2. Plastic barrier. Before the old unit comes out, we hang a poly sheet over the interior side of the opening. The rest of the room stays warm and the dust stays on our side.
  3. Doors and hallways closed. Interior doors are shut so the furnace only has to recover one room.
  4. Cold-rated materials. Standard window foam stops curing properly below about 5°C. We use low-expansion winter foam rated to -30°C and silicone sealants rated for cold application. Caulking that goes on at -15°C and never cures is how drafts start, and it’s the main reason some winter installs go badly.
  5. Exterior finish when it’s safe. Capping and exterior caulking happen the same day unless wind chill is extreme, in which case we seal the interior fully and return for the exterior on the next calm day. The house is weather-tight either way.

Exterior doors go the same way, with the added step of pre-fitting the slab in the shop so the swap takes about an hour. Our door install timing guide has the details.

What’s actually different in winter

Factor Summer Winter (Winnipeg)
Time per opening 45–90 min 30–60 min (we move faster; prep is done indoors)
Foam and sealant Standard Low-temp rated to -30°C
Weather cut-off Heavy rain Below about -25°C or wind chill -35°C, or high wind
Booking lead time 6–10 weeks 3–5 weeks (shorter queue)
Rebates Same Same; claim on completion (2026 rebate guide)
Heat loss during job None Noticeable but brief; one room, under an hour

Pros of a winter install

  • Shorter wait. Spring and fall are our busiest seasons. Winter bookings get an install date weeks sooner.
  • You feel the result immediately. Replace a drafty window on a Tuesday and you’ll know by Wednesday morning. Summer installs make you wait six months to find out.
  • Leaks are obvious. Cold weather makes any air leak around a frame easy to find and fix before the crew leaves. Our post on drafts around newly installed windows explains what to check.
  • You stop paying for the old window now. With Hydro rates up 4% this year, every month a failed unit stays in costs money. We ran the numbers in what drafty windows cost this winter.
  • Rebate funding is still available. Efficiency Manitoba’s $100-per-unit rebate pays on completed, invoiced jobs; finishing in winter means you claim sooner.

Cons, plainly

  • Weather delays. A -30°C week or a blizzard pushes the date. We’ll call the day before.
  • Exterior work may come in two visits. On the coldest days we finish the outside capping once it warms up.
  • Snow and ice around the house. Our crew needs a clear path and clear ground under each window. Keep walks shovelled and let us know about ice on the roof edge.
  • A short cold draft. You’ll feel it for the hour the opening is out. Keep the family in another room with the door shut.

What we won’t do in winter

We won’t install below roughly -25°C air temperature or in wind chills near -35°C. Foam and sealant performance drops, crews work slower, and the heat loss from the house isn’t worth it. This winter is forecast to be milder than normal, with Winnipeg carrying 80–89% odds of above-normal temperatures, so we expect more workable days than usual. We also don’t skip exterior sealing “until spring” and leave the house that way. If the outside can’t be finished the same day, the inside is sealed airtight before we leave, and the return visit is scheduled before the truck pulls out.

How to prep your home for a winter install

  1. Shovel and salt the walkway and the ground under each exterior opening.
  2. Move furniture and breakables a metre back from each window. Take down blinds and curtains.
  3. Turn the furnace humidifier down a few days before; drier air means less frost on fresh foam.
  4. Pick one warm room for kids and pets, and keep that door closed.
  5. Have the thermostat at its normal setting. Cranking it up doesn’t help.
  6. Clear a spot inside the front door for boots, tools and the new units.

What winter customers say

One reviewer described our lead installer, Oleg, finishing a full window and door job “even with frigid cold temperatures” and taking the time to do it right. Another had ten large windows and a door replaced in one day in February. Read them on our Google reviews and find us on our Google Business Profile.

Frequently asked questions

Will my furnace struggle during the install?

No. One opening for under an hour, with the room sealed off, is about the same load as leaving a door open for a delivery.

Does cold affect the vinyl frames?

Vinyl gets stiffer in the cold, so we keep units in the heated truck until the opening is ready. Once installed, our frames are rated for Winnipeg winters. See vinyl windows Winnipeg.

Can you install a patio door in winter?

Yes. A sliding patio door takes two to three hours and the opening is covered with poly the whole time.

Is winter cheaper?

Our pricing is the same year-round, but financing promos and rebate timing can work in your favour. Ask about 0% financing with no payments for 12 months.

How far ahead should I book?

Three to five weeks for custom units. Call now for a December or January date.
