How Long Does a Door Install Take? | SmartTech Winnipeg

How Long Does a Door Install Take?

A standard entry door install takes 3 to 5 hours. Interior doors take 1 to 2 hours. Patio and garden doors take 4 to 8 hours. Any install that changes the opening size takes 1 to 3 days.

All times below assume a two-person crew and an existing opening in sound condition.

Install Times by Door Type

Professional door installation showing removal of an old door, frame preparation, new door fitting, insulation, sealing, and final adjustment

Door Type Install Time Main Variable
Interior slab, existing frame 30–60 minutes Hinge and latch alignment
Interior pre-hung 1–2 hours Squaring the frame
Storm or screen door 1–3 hours Condition of existing frame
Entry door, same opening 3–5 hours Threshold and sill prep
Entry door with sidelights or transom 5–8 hours Unit weight, glass sealing
Sliding patio door 4–6 hours Track leveling
Garden or French door 5–8 hours Aligning two active panels
Opening size change, any door 1–3 days New header and framing

Entry door figures cover exterior door installation into an existing rough opening. Storm doors installed on the same visit as an entry door add roughly 1 hour rather than requiring a separate booking; pricing is quoted separately and is covered in our storm door installation cost breakdown.

Conversions between sliding patio doors and garden doors usually change the opening width and move into the 1-to-3-day range. Our patio door and garden door comparison identifies which conversions require framing work.

Time the Opening Is Exposed

30 to 90 minutes for a standard entry door.

The wall is open only between removal of the old unit and fastening of the new one. Prep, insulation, caulking, trim, and hardware installation all occur with the new door already set. On multi-door jobs, openings are done sequentially, so only one is exposed at a time.

Factors That Add Time

Condition Time Added
Rot in frame, sill, or subfloor 4–8 hours
Out-of-square opening 1–2 hours
Brick or stucco exterior vs. siding 1–3 hours
Sidelights or transom 2–3 hours
Multipoint lock system 30–60 minutes
Restricted access or second storey 1–2 hours
Opening size change 1–3 days

Rot is the most common unplanned variable and is generally not visible until the old unit is removed. Out-of-square openings are frequent in pre-1960 Winnipeg homes due to foundation movement.

Repair service calls are shorter than replacements. Hinge adjustment, weatherstripping replacement, and lock swaps run 1 to 2 hours. Our guide on when a door should be repaired instead of replaced sets out the threshold.

Full Project Timeline

Stage Duration
In-home measure 30–45 minutes, typically booked within 7 days
Manufacturing, stock door 1–3 weeks
Manufacturing, custom size, glass, or finish 6–12 weeks
Scheduling 3 days to 2 weeks
Install day 3–5 hours

Total from first contact to finished door: 4 to 14 weeks.

Custom glass inserts, non-standard sizes, and specialty finishes sit at the upper end. Order date determines install season: a September order installs in late October or November; a November order installs in January. Season also affects pricing, which is covered in our breakdown of door installation costs in Winnipeg.

Winter Installation

Winter adds approximately 1 hour to a standard entry door install.

  • Standard acrylic and silicone caulks will not cure below approximately 5°C; low-temperature or polyurethane formulations are required
  • Sealants and low-expansion foam are stored heated until the moment of use; cold reduces yield per can
  • Flashing tape loses adhesion in cold and requires primer
  • A tarped or sheeted work zone is set up at the opening
  • Below approximately -18°C, vinyl components become brittle and installs are typically rescheduled

Manufacturer warranties may specify an installation temperature range. Confirm the range before booking a cold-weather install.

Homeowner Preparation

  • Clear a 4-foot path from driveway to door
  • Remove furniture, rugs, and breakables within 6 feet of the opening
  • Shovel and salt the walkway in winter
  • Confirm handle set, finish, and lock style before install day
  • Secure pets away from the work area
  • Have an adult present to approve swing direction and threshold height
