Can You Cut Down a Steel Exterior Door?
You can trim up to 3/4 inch off the bottom rail of a steel exterior door. The sides and top cannot be cut. The allowance depends on manufacturer, core type, and rail width. Cutting past the wood rail into the foam core voids most warranties.

Only the perimeter frame can be cut. It is not visible from outside, and its width varies by manufacturer.

Bottom rails are built wider for field trimming. Side stiles carry the hinge screws and lockset bore. Some steel doors permit only 1/2 inch — confirm against the manufacturer spec sheet.
Cutting Into the Foam Core
- Foam crumbles and will not dress to a clean edge
- Foam holds no fasteners; a door sweep cannot be attached
- The edge cannot be sealed air-tight
- Warranty coverage is void
- In Manitoba, an unsealed bottom edge fails through freeze-thaw within one winter
The slab must be replaced. There is no field repair.
Alternatives Before Cutting

Threshold caps adjust with screws along the top face. Backing them out gains up to 1/4 inch in under ten minutes.
Cutting Method
- Mark the line on both faces. Confirm the measurement twice.
- Score the steel skin along the line on both faces with a utility knife.
- Tape over the line to reduce blade chatter.
- Cut with a fine-tooth carbide or metal-cutting blade against a clamped straight edge. Support both faces.
- File the cut edge smooth.
- Seal the exposed rail immediately with exterior-grade sealant or a manufacturer touch-up kit, then refit the sweep.

When the Door Does Not Fit

Standard Canadian exterior slabs are 30, 32, 34, and 36 inches wide by 80 inches tall. Rough openings run slab width plus 2 inches and height plus 2.5 inches for a pre-hung unit.
Pre-1960 Winnipeg homes often have non-standard openings from foundation movement. Measure the opening before purchasing.
